Explore the many opportunities that acrylics have to offer!  We’ll be pouring inks, doing collages, trying textured mediums and gels, printing monotypes, marbleizing, making transfers, stamping, stenciling, bubble wrap textures, gold and silver leaf, alcohol drops plus getting acquainted with the new interactive acrylic paints.  Acrylic colors are luminous and the texture possibilities are boundless.  We’ll discuss brushes, papers, canvases and more.  Talks about techniques and products, demonstrations and individual help are available.  Supply list is on line.  Can’t draw?  This class is for YOU!  Both serious artists who are eager to learn some new techniques and novices who want to play are welcome.

Beginning Metal Clay Jewelry New

Create silver jewelry using Precious Metal Clay (PMC), a relatively new approach to jewelry making. Microscopic particles of fine silver are suspended in an organic binder with water, making a pliable, clay-like material which can be formed into jewelry. During kiln firing, the binder burns away leaving a pure silver creation. Explore many different ways to express your jewelry ideas. This class is for Beginning students only. Each class period will introduce a new technique so you can chose to create a project using that technique if desired. Caricature for Adults & Teens

Concept Based Oil Painting

This course, with a four hour format, is for serious artists of all levels from beginning through advanced. Ample guidance will be given on “how to paint” issues such as composition, color, tools and techniques, but the primary emphasis of course will be far more fascinating topic of thinking creatively. Individual guidance will be available whenever needed, and the course will conclude with a group discussion of the student’s works. Subject matter and painting style will be each student’s choice. Students will be responsible for bringing proper materials, including any necessary reference materials, beginning with the first class. Watercolor pencils are a terrific medium that can be used for sketching while traveling, for creating a nature journal, or for doing outdoor studies to be used later in more complete paintings. This class will focus on drawing from nature and still lifes. We will discuss how to create strong graphite drawings as a basis for use with watercolor pencils. We will also include techniques that can be used for creating loose sketches while painting on location. Participants will have a chance to try out several different brands of pencils to see which products suit their own personal style.

Students of all levels are encouraged to bring items of inspiration to work with. Instruction will include working with mixed media, found items, beads and non-precious material. Basic jewelry making skills a plus, but not required. Students do not need to know how to solder, but must come willing to learn. Students will be supplied copper and brass base metals for demonstration purposes and are highly encouraged to bring their own sterling silver or other metals to work with. Individual attention will be given on a one-on-one basis. Areas of coverage and instruction will be tailored to the group, with a needs assessment occurring on the first day of class. Additional techniques, projects and inspiration will be sourced from Brandon’s book, “The Jeweler’s Studio Handbook”, Quarry Books 2009. Brandon also offers advanced students the option to learn to make some of their own tools. Art Room at South Franklin Circle

This course will meet on six Tuesday afternoons from 12:00 to 4:00 in the Art Room at South Franklin Circle.  Classes begin on September 14 and continue through October 26.  There will not be a class on September 28.

The course will take students through an easily understood six-step process, from the initial idea through the creation of a representational painting.  Strong emphases will be placed on the discovery of a creative concept and methods for technically mastering well-crafted realist images.

Students will learn ways to overcome drawing limitations, methods for developing compelling images, and techniques for using oil paints to create works of art which tell a story.

Viking Knit Chain New

This introduction to the art of knitting or weaving chain using the viking stitch will give you the opportunity to create your own handmade chain. We will learn the basics of the stitch and make chain “sketches” by varying the chain width and gauge of wire to practice. This will help you chose the final design of the chain you will make. Expect to complete one chain within the class, however you may work on a chain on your own time to complete as many as you would like. Materials fee of $15.00 for wire to make sketches and other materials (final chain costs separate). Final chain can be made in Artistic wire or fine silver. Artistic wire will be less than $10.00; silver cost will vary according to market price and gauge chosen with an approximate cost of $20-25.
